Across the continent, the month ended the coldest in 23 years and the wettest in at least 50 years. While wet weather suppressed foot traffic to some locations, cold conditionis had a positive impact on seasonal businesses, which occurred on the heels of a warm and dry September. In the United States, it was the coldest October since 1976 & the wettest in 50 years. Canada recorded the wettest October since 2006 and the 5th coldest in 50 years. Temperature: The U.S. experienced its coldest October since 1976, and 2nd coldest in 50 years. The Northwest and South Central regions reported their 4th coldest October in 50 years, the West North Central 2nd coldest, the Northeast coldest since 1993, the Southwest
coldest since 1984, and the Great Lakes region was coldest since 1988. In Canada, Calgary recorded its coldest October in 50 years and Toronto recorded its coldest since 1993. Omaha, NE, Oklahoma City, OK, and Kansas City, MO reported coldest in 50 years. Minneapolis, St. Louis, Dallas, and Denver reported their 2nd coldest October in 50 years. Conversely, the Southeast was warmer than last year, with Miami reporting its warmest October in 50 years, Tampa 4th warmest, and Orlando 6th warmest.
Precipitation:
Heavy snow and rain storms across North America resulted in many record breaking events. In the U.S., the South Central and East North Central regions recorded their wettest October in 50 years, and the Southeast recorded its wettest October since 1995. The following cities also had record wet months: St. Louis, Memphis, and Little Rock all experienced their wettest October in 50 years. Dallas was wettest since 1994, Chicago wettest since 2001, and Philadelphia 5th wettest in 50 years. A snow storm that traveled through the East the second week of the month broke records for many cities: Chicago, Buffalo, Albany and Binghamton, NY all reported record snowfall on October 16th, and Boston recorded its earliest snowfall ever on the 18th.
Significant Weather Events:
- October week 1 was the coldest, wettest & snowiest start to the month in the U.S. in 4 years. For Canada, it was the coldest week 1 in 11 years and the wettest in over 12 years.
- October week 2 was the coldest in the U.S. and Canada in over 12 years, and was coldest in several regions in over 12 years including the Middle Atlantic, New England, and West North Central. It was also the snowiest in 4 years in the U.S. and was the wettest second week of October in over 12 years in the East South Central and Pacific Regions.
- October week 3 in the U.S. was the wettest since 2004 and the snowiest in 7 years. In Canada, temperatures in October week 3 were similar to last year, although it was the second wettest week in 10 years.
- Hurricane Rick, a storm that formed in the eastern Pacific, impacted Baja and spread heavy rain into the South Central U.S. mid-month.
- The last week of the month was the warmest final week in 5 years in the eastern half of the continent. In the West, snowfall continued as Denver received its largest October snowfall in 12 years, causing traffic delays and driving demand for snow removal products. It was the wettest final week of October in over eleven years, and areas reported severe flooding. For Canada, the last week of October was the wettest since 2005.
